Today: Wine about it.

[tweetmeme source=”elizabethev” only_single=false]This weekend I took a little road trip to Little Compton, Rhode Island with my family to Sakonnet Vineyards to celebrate my mother’s birthday.  Why whine about growing older more experienced, when you can wine about it?

While the rest of the gang enjoyed their tasting, I got to enjoy some time with my niece (she’s underage by… um… 20 years and 9 months) and walked around the grounds a bit.  My sister-in-law showed me how to feed Nora with a bottle, just in time for my little babysitting adventure next week.  I am going to teach her so many swear words.  Just kidding.  Obviously.

I made it back to the tasting room to sneak a few sips from my sister’s glass.  I usually gravitate towards the whites, but I really liked the Cock of the Walk Red(awkward name; tasty, spicy wine), and brought a bottle home to share with Nick.  Thirtieth birthday parties, bachelorette parties and Bruins games aside, I rarely drink beer (truthfully, I rarely booze anymore period), so avoiding gluten in that way hasn’t been an issue.  Wine’s sort of tricky though, because I’ve read that some vineyards use flour in their barrels, or during the wine making process.  I figure a sip won’t kill me.  And if it does… welp, that’s probably a good way to go.  Thoughts about death and diets aside (I am delightful, no?), we had a lovely afternoon.

After the tasting, we enjoyed a cheese plate on the patio as the sun started to emerge.  The property is absolutely gorgeous and the atmosphere is very relaxed and warm.  It is definitely well worth a day trip from Boston.  There’s much more to see in the area now called the Farm Coast, including specialty shops, antiques, working farms, vineyards, breweries and lovely scenery.   When I worked in Rhode Island I called the area “the miles between my office and home, where I get speeding tickets and then cry because I am hungry, stuck in traffic and generally crabby.”  The Farm Coast has a much nicer ring to it.  Less whine, more wine.

Today: Summertime.

[tweetmeme source=”elizabethev” only_single=false]While Memorial Day may mark the unofficial start to summer, today is the real deal.  Happy Summer Solstice, ladies and gents.  We reached 90 degrees in Boston, my hair was extra poodle-ly, I started sweating from my elbow creases while walking to get the mail, and my dog needed to be carried back inside after a short prance around the block.  Yep.  Summer’s here.

We celebrated the solstice– and more importantly, Tina‘s birthday– at the Liberty Hotel’s Yappier Hour this evening.  While this may not be bulldog weather, Clark made the most of his time with Murphy and a yard full of other dogs.  And a horse Great Dane.

When Clark hit the deck, we knew it was time to get the little dude back in the air conditioning.  We’re enjoying the rest of the first day of summer with a big pitcher of water and a few frosty treats.

Today: National Running Day {and an OrthoLite giveaway}

[tweetmeme source=”elizabethev” only_single=false]Welp, I broke my summer run streak by accident earlier this week.  Note to self: run in the morning when there’s even the slightest chance work will get in the way at night.

A missed day is no reason to fall of the bandwagon entirely, though.  Especially when it’s National Running Day.

This run streak business has been a great reminder that on some days, a mile is perfectly enough.  And that all you really need is a good pair of shoes and a bit of motivation.  All the gadgets in the universe won’t run for you, and sometimes, they just get in the way.  (Other times, it feels like Lady Gaga is running for me.  Let’s be serious.)

I’ve stressed before (in my sternest writing voice) the importance of getting fitted for a good pair of kicks.  It’s the best way to ensure you’re running in a shoe that was made for you, protecting you from needless injury (fingers and toes crossed).  Once you’ve got your perfect-for-you shoes, there’s still room for customization.  Is it me, or do most stability shoes look like robot feet?  Thank goodness for fun colors and flashy shoe laces. My favorite way to customize lately, though, isn’t just for show.  In fact, I’m the only one (besides you, now) who knows they’re there.

The lovely people at OrthoLite sent me a free pair of their performance insoles, which were designed to fit athletic shoes.  You may already be wearing OrthoLite insoles without knowing it, as they are built into the top brands of athletic shoes and outdoor boots (Reebok, adidas, New Balance, Nike, Under Armour, etc.).  Unfortunately, many other brands cut production cost by scrimping on their insoles (not cool, bro), despite the impact an insole can have on fit, comfort, and performance.

I slipped my insoles into my running shoes the day the arrived and immediately noticed the difference.  While my shoes fit great to begin with, the addition of insoles make them feel surprisingly cushier and springier (shockingly, those are both actual words), without adding any weight.  I rarely wear socks when I run, so I really appreciate how soft and smooth these insoles are.

An added bonus: these little guys are fully washable.  Not that my feel smell.  They don’t.  Regardless of what Clark tells you.

Today: Napping and comfort food.

Clark and his two besties have the right idea.

Unfortunately, days like today are also made for 12 and a half hours spent at the office and in meetings, where napping is generally frowned upon.   Fortunately, eating good comfort food is nearly always acceptable.  I’ll likely spend much of today day-dreaming about warm, flaky, gooey food.

Get out of here, pumpkin.

This weekend we celebrated my lovely mother’s birthday a few days early with a nice family dinner at home.  My brother and sister-in-law brought oysters and grilled steaks with an herb gremolata straight from my dad’s garden (…the herbs, that is.  I think the oysters came from the ocean, and the steaks from, like, a cow).  My sister made an incredible corn and tomato salad, the perfect way to wind down the summer.

I hear they're delicious. I'll stick to the lemons, though.

My younger brother and I were responsible for appetizers and desserts.  He was especially helpful when I had no where to toss an aggressively burning match, after lighting a few candles on the cheesecake sampler.  A sensible person would have simply blown it out, instead of panicking and possibly blacking out.  It’s only a match, lady.

Our little appetizer was much less dramatic.  I broke out my Fillo Factory organic pastry shells (swag from The Healthy Living Summit) and with just the teeniest bit of creativity, came up with the perfect comfort food: warm, bite-sized, creamy, with a bit of kick.

The shells come pre-baked, so it was as easy as choosing a filling, and popping them in the oven at 350 degrees for a few minutes to heat through.  I topped a dollop of raspberry habanero sauce with a tiny wedge of brie and a sprinkle of freshly cracked pepper.  The only thing better than delicious comfort food, is easy and delicious comfort food.  Especially when you get to share it with the people you love the most.

Wha chu doin’ here so soon? And why have I written September 30th on three different checks today?  If the old adage is true, and time really does fly when you’re having fun, it’ll soon be November.  And shortly thereafter,  Santa Claus will be breaking into our condo via an air conditioning vent (there’s no chimney, he has to get creative).

So in the spirit of being early, rather than late, here’s a picture of Prince Clark dressed for Halloween.  His “Whoa, whoa, whoa there, commoner. I was sired by a champion.” ‘tude really comes out when he’s wearing a crown.

I couldn't keep this gem to myself for more than six hours. And no, PETA, that's not real Dalmatian.

Don’t worry.  There is more where that came from.  Much more. So much more that I may need to find a part-time job to support my dog-costume-buying problem habit.  Just kidding.  It’s not quite that bad.  Yet.

Slightly less creepy things in store this October:

My brother is getting married in a week!  I can barely contain my excitement.  Seriously.  I am freaking out, man.  Any time I think about it, a goofy ear-to-ear smile emerges and I have to fight a very strong urge to high five strangers.  I put “Somebody’s Getting Married” (from Muppets Take Manhattan, obvi) on my iPod.  And I am incorporating various elements of purple (today it’s eyeliner) into every outfit between now and the time I slip effortlessly (here’s to hoping hahaha) into my bridesmaid dress.

Cristy and I are meeting up tomorrow for the Boston Local Food Festival.  Let me know if you’re going to be in the ‘hood, as well. 🙂

If my math is correct (safe bet that it’s not), we will be running close to 100 miles in October with Team in Training.  I am at that magical point in marathon training where every, single long run is a personal distance record.  It’s sort of nice to have a record breaking weekend, every weekend.  Nice and terrifying at the same time. I truly appreciate everyone who is so generously supporting me in this endeavor.  You mean the world to me.

I am also looking forward to the birthdays of my favorite (and only) sister and my favorite (and only) boyfriend, our Clarkiversary, the Boston Book Festival , hunting for non-itchy sweaters, apple picking and decreased humidity.  In no particular order.
